Does the Manufactured Housing Board have jurisdiction on the Landlord/ Tenant statue for Mobile Home Communities? 

No.  The Manufactured Housing Board does not have statutory authority to handle landlord/tenant issues in Manufactured Housing Communities.  You may contact the Maine Office of the Attorney General at (207) 626-8800.

Does my community need a license?

Communities requiring a license are defined as Mobile Home Communities in the Manufactured Housing Act, Title 10, Chapter 951 § 9081, view laws & rules.

How do I receive approval to build a new or expand an existing community?

What should I do if I sell/transfer my community?

Community licenses are not transferable.  You should notify the Board of the sale and advise the new owner regarding the requirement for a new license.  The new owner will have to submit a New Ownership Application (PDF) or call the office at (207) 624-8612.

What are the Board’s requirements for health and safety issues (sewer, water, electrical, fuel storage, etc.)?

Community licensing standards are found in the Manufactured Housing Communities Rules, Chapter 850.

What should I do if my water system fails or is contaminated?

You must notify the Board IMMEDIATELY and provide an emergency supply of potable water.  See the Manufactured Housing Communities Rules, Chapter 850.2, view the requirements.

What water tests do I have to do?

Water testing depends on the type of water system(s) in your community.  See Manufactured Housing Communities Rules, Chapter 840.6, view the requirements.

I need to test the water in my community, where can I purchase a water test kit?

You may contact the State of Maine Health & Environmental Test Laboratory at 1-866-522-4385 or go to the Drinking Water Program website at www.maine.gov/dhhs/eng/water to order water test kits on-line or for further information regarding other laboratories certified for water testing.

What should I do if I get an unsatisfactory result on a water test?

If your system is a public or private system, you must contact the Manufactured Housing Board at (207) 624-8612.

What do I do if I have a problem with sewage on the ground or a backed up main drain?

You should contact the Plumbing Inspector for your municipality.  The Plumbing Inspector (in some jurisdictions this is the Code Enforcement Officer) has the direct authority to handle all wastewater violations.

How can my community be approved for a “Senior’s Only” community?

The Manufactured Housing Board does not have jurisdiction over community classifications, in order to classify your community as a “Senior’s Only” community you must contact the Human Rights Commission at (207) 287-6050 for further information.
