Purpose

The Electricians' Examining Board was established to protect the public from hazards arising from the use of electricity for light, heat, power and other purposes through the regulation of electricians in Maine.

The primary responsibility of the Board is to ensure the competency of electricians through examination; to issue licenses to those qualified to hold the title of Master electrician, Journeyman electrician, Limited electrician, Apprentice electrician, Journeyman-in-training electrician or Helper electrician; to investigate complaints of noncompliance with or violations of the law and board rules; and to issue permits.

Staff Announcements

Electricians’ Examining Board announces a new inspector.

The Electricians’ Examining Board would like to welcome Joe Sewell to the team as an Electrical Inspector. Joe is a licensed master electrician and joined the team in October 2022. He brings over 25 years of experience in all types of electrical work to his position. His coverage area is Somerset, Piscataquis, and Aroostook counties. Notice Regarding License Verification Requests (PDF)

Effective March 1, 2019, the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation (OPOR) will no longer issue paper license verifications. License verifications are available, free of charge, on OPOR’s official database, https://www.pfr.maine.gov/ALMSOnline/ALMSQuery/Welcome.aspx?board=4220. This database is updated in real time as changes occur. The Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation considers this information to be a secure, primary source for license verification.

Chapter 180- Licensure by Endorsement  

The Electricians' Examining Board has proposed a rule Chapter 180, Licensure by Endorsement. Comments on the proposed rules may be submitted to the Regulatory Board Manager by emailing electrician.board@maine.gov or by mailing comments to the Electricians’ Examining Board, Attn: Matthew Kaply, 35 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0035.  The deadline for comments is Friday, March 10, 2023 by 5:00 p.m.

This new chapter outlines a pathway for licensure if the applicant presents proof of licensure by another jurisdiction of the United States that maintains substantially equivalent license requirements.  The chapter proposes a licensure by endorsement pathway for licensed journeyman and master electricians, and provides what will be considered “substantially equivalent” license requirements in another U.S. jurisdiction.
