Atlantic Menhaden Atlantic Menhaden

The Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), historically an important reduction fishery, has in recent years become a pelagic bait fishery, supplying our valuable lobster fishery.  It is also an important forage species for predators such as seabirds, marine mammals, and a variety of larger fish species. Landings in Maine were about 4.3 million pounds in 2016 valued at about $1.2 million ex-vessel.
