The Maine Department of Marine Resources is contributing to a genetics study of global bluefish populations. Distributed throughout the world’s oceans, including the Gulf of Maine, bluefish likely comprise multiple genetically distinct populations. Understanding these distinct populations will support improved management here in the Gulf of Maine and throughout the world. The approach is to collect DNA samples from the fins of bluefish caught or harvested by recreational fishermen in Maine. Those samples will contribute to a genetic library of bluefish from around the globe.
If you catch a bluefish and wish to participate:
- Please clip a small piece about the size of a large fingernail from the dorsal (top) or tail fin before release
- Store the clipping in your cooler
- Call or text our sampler Declan at 207-707-2498 to collect it for the study
