Burnt Island Light House
Burnt Island Light Station, Boothbay Harbor, Maine
Come learn about Burnt Island’s history, visit its working lighthouse, explore its five-acre island, and/or participate in professional development training. Approximately one mile from the port of Boothbay Harbor, this historic site is an exceptional educational and recreational facility for teachers, school children, summer visitors and boaters. Burnt Island can only be reached by boat.
News
- June 2020 – The island will remain open to recreational boaters from 10 AM to 5 PM. However, due to restoration construction, the dock will be reserved Monday through Friday for the contractors’ boats, and there will be no tours in 2020.
- May 2020 – Burnt Island has a new access ramp thanks to a grant from the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund
- April 2020 – In 2021 the Burnt Island Lighthouse will celebrate its Bicentennial. A local, non-profit organization, Keepers of Burnt Island Lighthouse, is raising money to complete its restoration. Please visit the Keepers website to see their progress, find contact information for donations, and learn more about the restoration. Thank-you!
- May 2019 – Elaine Jones honored with ALF’s “Keeper of the Light” award
Living History Lighthouse Tour – There will be no tours during 2020 due to restoration construction.
Historic Information – On the National Register of Historic Places, Burnt Island’s rich history began in 1821 when Keeper Joshua B. Cushing lit the lighthouses’ lamps for the very first time. Visit the Burnt Island Programs page for more information about its historic past.
Come Ashore – The island is open seven days-a-week from 10 AM – 5 PM. Please leave the suggested donation of $2.00 per person to help with operational expenses. There will be no tours during 2020 due to restoration construction. The dock will be reserved Monday through Friday for the contractors’ boats. There is a drop off/pick up zone (yellow rail on end of dock), moorings, and beach access for paddlers. The work zone has been roped off for your safety, so please do not enter this area.
