Sea-Run Brook Trout

Sea-Run Brook Trout, or “Salters” are the same species as Brook Trout, popular to inland anglers and found throughout Maine and other northeast Atlantic States. Like Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout, some brook trout individuals take advantage of feeding and growth opportunities in coastal habitats and actively migrate to and from salt water. These populations are found in cold, clear coastal streams as individuals still require access to freshwater for spawning. Salters are popular among anglers, but their distribution and abundance are not well documented, nor how mixed sea-run individuals are with non- migratory brook trout. Like other sea-run species, salters need improved connections between freshwater and coastal environments to freely access freshwater habitats as well.
