U.S. CDC: First Marburg Virus Disease Outbreak in the Republic of Rwanda

Please review this information from the U.S. CDC on the Marburg virus disease outbreak in Rwanda and the federal response to it. Further information is provided here for Maine facilities and providers. No confirmed cases of MVD related to this outbreak have been reported in the United States or other countries outside of the Republic of Rwanda to date.

Any patients with confirmed or suspected Marburg virus disease must be reported immediately to Maine CDC by phone at 800-821-5821.

All health care facilities (including outpatient clinics, urgent care centers, etc.) should prepare to identify, isolate, and inform key partners when a patient/client presents with signs/symptoms concerning for Marburg virus disease. Information and health care facility readiness assessment tools are available from the U.S. CDC at https://www.cdc.gov/marburg/site.html#hcp and the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center (NETEC) at https://netec.org/education-training/.

The Maine CDC can provide guidance regarding how to test for Marburg, malaria, and influenza, and how to transfer a patient to another facility, if appropriate. HETL can perform norovirus, respiratory virus, and malaria testing.

Please note that this health advisory highlights new the U.S. CDC interim recommendations for public health management of U.S.-based healthcare personnel who were present in a healthcare facility in Rwanda in the previous 21 days (released October 3, 2024). These interim recommendations include post-arrival symptom monitoring of health care workers by health departments. They also include exclusion from work duties in a U.S. health care facility until 21 days after their last presence in a health care facility in Rwanda. This applies to all U.S. health care workers who have been present in any health care facility, including outpatient settings or traditional healers, in Rwanda, within the last 21 days and who are returning to the United States.
