Healthy Communities

Public health initiatives focused on building Healthy Communities aim to improve the well-being of all residents by addressing various aspects of health and social determinants of health. This includes promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing diseases, and ensuring access to essential resources like education, housing, and healthcare,

The Maine CDC supports health communities by providing services in Maine's public health districts, local public health officers, public nursing program, our rural health and primary care program and the Maine CDC Office of Population Health.

Maine's Public Health Districts

Maine's nine Public Health Districts are geographic areas that work to improve public health in the state. Each district is made up of one or more counties. In 2011, in collaboration with the five Maine Tribal jurisdictions, a Tribal Health District was established with boundaries determined by Tribal Health Center service areas and tribal jurisdictional boundaries.

Local Health Officers

Maine's Local Health Officers (LHOs) have served Maine communities since 1885 when the role was established by Maine statute. LHOs are appointed by their municipality, serve locally, and have an important role in the coordination of state and local public health.

Public Health Nursing

Maine CDC Public Health Nurses (PHN) are registered nurses working to improve, preserve, and protect the health and quality of life for all Mainers. Public Health Nurses work to improve the health of individuals, populations, and communities across Maine.

The Rural Health and Primary Care Program

The Rural Health Program works to promote access to quality health care for all people living in Maine's rural and underserved areas. Program priorities include:

  • Increase resources and reduce costs for health care statewide, with a focus on rural areas
  • Facilitate communication among stakeholders on rural health issues
  • Increase access to primary, mental, and dental health care for underserved populations
  • Reduce geographic, financial, transportation, and other barriers that prevent access to health care services

Maine CDC Office of Population Health

Our Office of Health Equity collaborates with Maine CDC programs and partners with community leaders to ensure public health initiatives are informed by and reflect the needs of the people we serve. OPHE focuses on promoting and protecting the health of Maine people and the communities where they live, learn, work, and play. Health equity means everyone having a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health.
