The Seized Drug Unit identifies controlled substances seized by law enforcement agencies. The evidence analyzed is usually presented in the form of pills, powders and plant material. Our analysts use sophisticated instrumentation and techniques to weigh and identify various controlled substances, such as cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl.
Testing methods for the identification of controlled substances include Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS).
A completed Seized Drug Evidence Submission & Contract for Examination Form must accompany all seized drug evidence submitted to the Forensic Chemistry Section.
Seized drug evidence will only be analyzed upon receipt of a signed Case Activation Request Form submitted by the assigned prosecutor's office.
Requests for rush analysis of seized drug evidence may be made using the Expedited Analysis Request Form and will be evaluated by the unit supervisor or management.
Analysis turnaround time and the ability to accommodate expedited analysis requests are based upon staffing levels and available resources.
