Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE), West Nile virus (WNV), and Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) are all mosquito-borne viruses endemic to Maine. These infections can result in severe neurological disease and may be fatal. This advisory is intended to alert clinicians to the risk of human arboviral disease activity in Maine and provide information on prevention, testing, and reporting.
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) updated Maine's Control of Notifiable Diseases and Conditions Rule (10-144 CMR Chapter 258). The amended rule went into effect on June 4, 2025. This rule includes the Notifiable Diseases and Conditions List, which specifies the diseases and conditions that clinicians and clinical laboratories are required to report to the Maine CDC.
Ongoing measles outbreak activity across North America poses an ongoing risk of measles infection to people living in or visiting areas with measles transmission. Unvaccinated individuals are at the highest risk of infection. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) provides additional vaccination considerations for persons traveling outside of the U.S. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) recommendations for persons traveling within the U.S.
Ticks are already active this year in Maine following a record year in 2024. As the weather warms, the Maine CDC expects an increase in the number of Lyme and other tickborne disease case reports. The purpose of this advisory is to remind health care providers to consider testing patients presenting with possible tickborne disease. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Maine and the Maine CDC encourages all Mainers to prioritize tick bite prevention with the message "Don't Let a Tick Make You Sick."
Each baby born in Maine is screened for laboratory markers of the conditions listed below. This list is correct as of April 1, 2021, but may change as conditions are added or removed from the testing panel.
