Respiratory Virus Dashboard Sandbox

This dashboard is a resource for tracking and understanding the spread of respiratory viral illnesses in Maine, including influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). These graphs show recent viral activity and severity data for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

This dashboard is updated every Wednesday by 3 pm. Each graph shows data through Sunday of the last reported week. These weeks are based on weeks defined in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The respiratory virus season starts the 40th MMWR week of the year and ends the 39th MMWR week of the next year. This typically means late September or early October to late September the next year.

Activity Summary

This summary shows respiratory virus activity levels in Maine. It uses emergency department (ED) visits resulting in a diagnosis of influenza, COVID-19, or RSV. The activity level compares the current season to peaks of previous seasons. Activity can be very low, low, moderate, high, or very high. This summary also shows the trend (increasing, decreasing, or stable) compared to the previous week. This includes data from ED visits, hospitalizations, and deaths related to respiratory illness. Data that are temporarily unavailable are denoted as "NA".

Emergency Department Surveillance

Diagnosis of influenza, COVID-19, or RSV during an Emergency Department (ED) visit are shown as a percentage of total ED visits each week. County-level ED visits are determined by county of residence.

Hospitalizations

These graphs show the total number of patients admitted to a hospital in Maine for influenza, COVID-19, or RSV. Data are collected through the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).

Deaths

This graph shows the total number of deaths due to influenza or COVID-19 in Maine by week of death. This includes deaths where influenza or COVID-19 is listed on the death certificate. It also shows the percentage of all deaths with pneumonia, influenza, and/or COVID-19 (PIC) listed on the death certificate. Deaths due to RSV are rarely reflected on death certificates. Therefore, RSV mortality surveillance is not routinely conducted in Maine and RSV-associated deaths are not shown in this graph. County-level deaths are determined by county of residence.

Outbreaks

These graphs show the number of outbreaks identified by week and cause. Outbreaks are defined differently based on virus and facility type. Influenza outbreaks include outbreaks due to influenza-like illness. We define influenza-like illness as fever and cough and/or sore throat with no confirmed testing.

More about the data.

Laboratory and Case Surveillance

These graphs show laboratory results for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV reported to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) or to Maine CDC (influenza only). Confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases reported to Maine CDC are also shown. Because not everyone with COVID-19 gets tested by a health care provider, the number of cases is an underestimation of the true amount of COVID-19 in Maine at any given time.
