The Toxicology Unit is responsible for the analysis of blood and urine samples. To order blood or urine collection kits, please contact: Evidence.HETLForensics@maine.gov
Blood samples are analyzed for the presence and the amount of alcohol by Gas Chromatography/Flame Ionization Detector (also referred to as "Headspace GC").
Blood and urine samples are screened for the presence of drugs and the identity of any suspected drugs is confirmed by Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) for blood samples or Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) for urine samples.
All toxicology evidence must be accompanied by the proper analysis request forms before testing will be performed.
Breath Alcohol Testing
The Toxicology Unit oversees and maintains the State's Breath Alcohol Testing program and performs calibration checks on breath testing instruments to ensure proper functionality. The unit also conducts and facilitates necessary repairs and provides semi-annual approvals of the State's instruments.
