Division / Program: Parks and Lands

Date: January 1, 2022
Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Indian Bar Road, Brooksville
State Park: Holbrook Island
Event Type: Nature Exploration, Special Event

On New Year's Day, Americas State Parks will once again be celebrating with a First Day Hike. These hikes provide a means for individuals and families to welcome the coming year in the outdoors, exercising and connecting with nature. Come and enjoy our wonderful trails all day on January 1st. We will have two featured hikes, one easy and one moderate. The easier hike is a family friendly walk totaling two miles out and back to Goose Pond and Falls using the Backshore, Back Road, and Goose Falls Trails. This route passes old homesteads, cemeteries, seal colonies and is fairly level. For a longer adventure, visitors can hike Iceworks Trail one mile in to Fresh Pond (with an option to walk around the pond trail) and return via the Aaron, Connector, and Mountain Loop Trails. This route follows our marked "Ski Loop" winter route and can be up to four miles in length. Maps of the highlighted routes will be provided and both hikes depart from the Backshore Trailhead. Volunteers will be providing warm beverages and park information from 1:00 - 4:00PM at the Backshore Trailhead Parking Lot along Indian Bar Road. Bring proper clothing and footwear. The event will be held rain or shine. For Virtual Visits and downloadable guides visit https://www.maine.gov/dacf/parks/discoverhistoryexplore_nature/activities/first-day-hikes.shtml
