Elfin World of Lichens & Mosses at Bradbury Mountain State Park

Division / Program: Parks and Lands

Date: June 10, 2023
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Location: 528 Hallowell Road in Pownal
State Park: Bradbury Mountain
Event Type: Nature Exploration

This walk will be led by Park Ranger and Maine Master Naturalist Jeff Pengel, and will focus on the miniature world of mosses and lichens. Expect to spend time bent over examining the subtle and often amazing features of these abundant but usually unnoticed organisms. Avoiding hardcore identification and terminology, we will look at their many adaptations for thriving in a world full of microhabitats in an attempt to understand their role in the larger ecosystem. Bring a hand lens if you have one, otherwise, we'll provide a loaner. Walk is geared toward teens and adults, and lasts about 90 minutes. Meet at the picnic shelter and wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes. Cameras are welcome; please be courteous of people who do not want to be in photos. Program is free with day-use entry and to those camping at the park. *Weather notice: May be cancelled due to continuous precipitation or lightning in the area.
