On Thursday, May 9, 2024, at approximately 7 PM, Troopers from Troop I responded to a tractor trailer rollover at mile 141 northbound on I-95 in Clinton. The truck that crashed was hauling approximately 15 million bees. The driver was transported to the hospital with complaints of pain. The bees were mostly contained, and the goal was to save them. The driver was headed to Washington County where the bees were to pollinate blueberry fields. Other assets assisting at the scene were the Clinton Fire Department, the Burnham Fire Department, MaineDOT, Dostie’s Towing, and the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The right lane was shut down throughout the night.

On Thursday May 9, 2024, at approximately 4:15 PM, Troopers from Troop I were dispatched to a report of a male pulled over near Mile Marker 19 southbound on Interstate 295 in Freeport. Callers reported a male with blood on his face trying to flag down traffic. Freeport Police, Fire and Rescue responded to assist, and a passing motorist stopped and began CPR on the male who had become unresponsive. The male did not recover and was pronounced deceased on scene by Freeport Rescue. Based on the facts and circumstances of the call, Major Crimes Unit South and an Evidence Response Technician were called to the scene. Upon further examination, and in speaking with family members it appears the male suffered a medical event. The deceased will be transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy will be performed. Traffic was reduced to one lane for a short period of time. No other information is available at this time.

On Thursday, May 9, 2024, at approximately 5:45 AM, members of Troop I with the assistance of the Northern Field Troop, and Troop K responded to a single vehicle crash on I-95 at mile marker 199 southbound in Old Town. The initial investigation indicates that the driver 26-year-old Patrick McMullin of Howland was traveling southbound when he lost control of his jeep while trying to pass another vehicle, went off roadway to the right, and struck a tree. McMullin and his passenger, 18-year-old Treasa Savage of Lincoln were both pronounced deceased on scene. The investigation is ongoing. The Maine State Police was assisted by MaineDOT, Old Town Police Department, Old Town Fire Department, and Sullivans Towing Service. The interstate was down to one lane for approximately 2 hours.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at approximately 8:15 AM, the Maine State Police received information that 33-year-old Marlon Cloutier of Augusta, was at a relative’s home on Sunset Ridge in the town of Sidney. Cloutier was wanted out of Penobscot County on Felony Burglary, Theft of Firearms, Violation of Conditional Release, Violation of a Protection Order and Possession of a Firearm. Troopers responded to the area and confirmed Cloutier was inside the residence. Residents of the home left shortly after Cloutier arrived. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and Sunset Ridge Road was shut down to traffic. Due to the nature of the warrant and recent threats of violence, the State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist just after 12:00 pm. After more than eight hours of negotiations Cloutier was taken into custody. Cloutier was transported to the Kennebec County Jail where he will be booked on the warrants and charged with Creating a Police Stand Off, Violation of Bail, Possession of Scheduled W Drugs and Refusing to Submit to Arrest of Detention.

On Monday, May 6, 2024, at approximately 7:18 am, the Paris Police Department responded to the report of a suspicious male.  The man was identified as 37-year-old Gary Porter who is unhoused.  Porter was arrested for an outstanding felony theft warrant.  He was transported to Stephen’s Memorial hospital where he was treated and released for conditions that were unrelated to the arrest.  Paris Police Chief Mike Dailey transported Porter to the Oxford County Jail.  While attempting to remove Porter from the vehicle at the jail Porter was able to slip his cuffs from the back to the front and move to the driver’s seat and steal the Paris Police cruiser.  Paris Police Chief Mike Dailey was thrown from the moving vehicle while attempting to stop Porter.

Police Officers from Norway, Oxford, Paris, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Marshals Office, and Maine State Police responded and began pursuing Porter.  Porter crashed on Route 117 in Paris. Officers confronted Porter and gunfire was exchanged.  Porter was struck but fled and stole an Oxford County Sheriff’s police vehicle which he crashed a short distance up the road.  Porter was taken into custody and treated at a local hospital.  Once Porter was released, he was transported to the Oxford County Jail and charged with two counts of Theft, Assault on a Police Officer, Escape, Eluding, and Violation of Bail.   

The Office of the Attorney General will investigate the law enforcement use of force and Maine State Police Major Crimes South will complete a criminal investigation.

All involved officers are being placed on administrative leave which is a standard practice in any officer involved shooting in Maine.

On Friday, May 3,^, 2024, at approximately 6:28 PM, Troopers responded to the area of mile marker 32 southbound on the Maine Turnpike for a motorcycle crash. Initial investigation shows that 21-year-old Zachary Swain of Connecticut was exiting the highway and failed to negotiate the curved southbound off-ramp. Swain struck the guard rail and was ejected from the motorcycle. He was pronounced deceased on scene by rescue personnel. The off-ramp was closed for two hours while the crash was investigated. The Biddeford Fire Department, Maine Turnpike Authority and Ray’s Truck Service assisted with the investigation and the re-opening of the ramp.

On Friday, April 26, 2024, at approximately 8:41 AM, the Maine State Police responded to mile 20 southbound on the Turnpike in Wells for a multiple-vehicle crash involving possible rollovers. Upon investigation, it was determined a black Toyota Prius operated by 23-year-old Oguzhan Cildir of Brighton, Massachusetts struck a silver Toyota Sienna minivan and a white Toyota Tacoma pickup. The white Toyota pickup reportedly rolled over several times. The driver of the pickup 53-year-old Gloria Cascio of Albion, Maine, was pronounced deceased on scene. The passenger in the pickup 60-year-old Vincent Cascio of Albion was transported via Lifeflight to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota minivan, 51-year-old Troy Perrault of Old Orchard Beach sustained minor injuries. The driver of the fourth vehicle involved in the crash, a gray Chevy Impala could not avoid the crash. The driver was not injured. The southbound lanes of the Turnpike were shut down for an extended period and have since re-opened. Kennebunk Fire and Rescue, Wells Fire and Rescue, and the Maine Turnpike Authority assisted on scene. The investigation is ongoing.

The body located on the banks of the Aroostook River in Caribou on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, has been identified by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner as 39-year-old Erik Foote of Washburn. The cause and manner of death are pending at this time. Any questions regarding the disappearance of Mr. Foote should be directed to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office as they are the primary investigative agency.

The Maine State Police and Caribou Police Department are investigating the discovery of a body located on the bank of the Aroostook River between the dam and Fort Street at approximately 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The deceased male will be transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy will be performed to determine positive identification and cause and manner of death. The Maine State Police and Caribou Police Department were assisted on scene by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and Caribou Fire and Rescue.

On Friday, April 19, 2024, the Maine State Police with assistance from the Windham Police Department, Maine Warden Service, New Hampshire State Police, and New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife Department conducted a search in the area of Stark, New Hampshire. During this search, human remains were located and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Concord, New Hampshire. Over the weekend investigators worked to process the scene where the remains were discovered and worked with the medical examiner’s office to make an identification. The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Alex Jackson of Windham. The cause and manner of his death are not being released at this time. Additional information will be released when it’s appropriate to do so.
