The Maine State Police went through a large reorganization in January of 2023. As part of this reorganization, the former Troop A (Alfred) and former Troop B (Gray) were combined to form the Southern Field Troop. The Southern Field Troop still utilizes both the Alfred Barracks located at 502 Waterboro Road in Alfred and the Gray Barracks located at 1 Game Farm Road in Gray. The Southern Field Troop is responsible for rural patrols in York, Oxford, Cumberland, and Androscoggin County and is currently staffed by a Troop Commander, six Sergeants, five Corporals, twenty Troopers, a Behavioral Health Coordinator, and a secretary.
The Southern Field Troop provides primary law enforcement coverage for the Towns of Dayton, Hollis, Limington, Limerick, Cornish, and Parsonsfield. The Southern Field Troop has Troopers assigned to a variety of specialty teams, including the K-9 Unit, the Tactical Team, the Crisis Negotiation Team, the Honor Guard, the PACE Team, the Member Assistance Team, the Crowd Management Team, the Motor Unit, and the Pipes and Drums. Additionally, the Southern Field Troop has many troopers with specialized training in other areas, including firearms instructors, EVOC instructors, and DRE’s. Recently, three members were assigned to task forces in different areas of the Troop.
The Alfred and Gray barracks also house detectives from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit. The Alfred barracks additionally houses members of the Tactical Team. All MSP members and units assigned to work out of both barracks work closely with each other to provide mutual aid and support as needed.
During 2024, the Southern Field Troop covered a total of 9,068 calls for service, which is an increase of 993 calls from the previous year. In addition, Troopers in the Southern Field Troop initiated 10,195 traffic stops for various violations, which is an increase of 5,410 over the previous year. The Southern Field Troop continues to partner with our surrounding police agencies to assure that collaboration and information sharing is maintained to benefit our investigative and preventative efforts. The Southern Field Troop is committed to maintaining the public’s safety through cooperation and community partnerships and will continue to work together to keep our community safe.
