The Maine DOE is pleased to provide an open-source instructional program for second-grade classrooms.
2nd Grade for ME is an interdisciplinary, whole-student instructional program adapted from Boston Public Schools’ Focus on Second curriculum. It supports students’ growth across literacy and language, science and engineering, social studies, the arts, and social-emotional learning. Grounded in research-based practices and aligned with Maine’s Learning Results, the program fosters both academic development and student agency—as learners and as citizens. With its intentional and integrated design, 2nd Grade for ME engages students in meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning that connects thinking with doing across a range of topics.

Lesson Plans

Unit 1 - How We Learn in our School Communities
Unit 1 launches the school year by guiding children and teachers in exploring the purpose of school and deepening their understanding of learning and learners, with a focus on fostering inclusive environments and meaningful interactions.

Unit 2 - The Forces of Wind & Water
Unit 2 highlights science through a study of how wind and water shape and reshape the land. It invites students to question the stability of the ground beneath us and to recognize that, across the world, Earth’s surface is constantly changing. In this unit, students investigate the effects of wind and water on land and explore how people adapt to and interact with these natural forces.
