Instructional Programming for ME

Instructional Programming Banner

The For ME Early Learning Instructional Programs were designed through modification and enhancement of Boston Public Schools’ Focus curriculum to build strong, aligned foundations for Maine’s youngest learners. Centered on the Pre-K through Grade 2 continuum, these programs focus on developmentally appropriate, high-quality, and playful instructional practices that create coherence across the early years and aim to close opportunity gaps. Grounded in national and local research, For ME supports the understanding that robust early learning experiences attend to children’s social, emotional, and academic development. Supported by reflective and responsive educators, children are encouraged to explore, take initiative, and think critically. Teachers frame cultural, linguistic, developmental, and geographic diversity as strengths, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose in all learners.

In Maine, early learning is shaped by a strong commitment to the whole child, ensuring that all children, regardless of geography, background, or ability, experience inclusive, culturally responsive, and engaging classrooms. The Maine Department of Education advances these goals by:

  • Focusing on a whole student approach
  • Encouraging innovation
  • Respecting educators
  • Providing information, guidance, professional learning, and support to schools and educators
  • Providing adequate and equitable school funding and resources
  • Inspiring trust in our schools

The For ME Early Learning Instructional Programs and their associated professional development promote Maine’s vision by emphasizing the following intentional instructional practices:

  • Purposeful discourse, facilitation, and responsive feedback
  • Hands-on, interdisciplinary experiential learning, including play
  • Recognition and support for diverse developmental paths and perspectives
  • Encouragement of agency, autonomy, and initiative in children
  • Ongoing documentation and reflection on teaching and learning

Together, these elements support young children in Maine to grow as confident, curious, and capable learners, ready to thrive in school and beyond.
