Pursuant to Title 35-A § 3475(5), a retail electricity customer that installs an eligible system with a combined inverter output exceeding 420 watts but no more than 1,200 watts, per service address, must notify their transmission and distribution (T&D) utility via a form prescribed by the Commission within 30 days of installation.
An eligible system is defined as a plug-in photovoltaic system or plug-in battery system, with an export capacity of 1,200 watts or less that is:
- Listed or certified in accordance with UL 3700, the Outline of Investigation for Interactive Plug-in Photovoltaic Equipment and Systems, and any other applicable standards developed by UL LLC, formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories, or the National Electrical Code specific to plug-in photovoltaic systems and plug-in battery systems;
- Listed or certified in accordance with a standard comparable to UL 3700 from a nationally recognized testing laboratory; or
- Configured in accordance with the National Electrical Code that is adopted by rule by the Electricians' Examining Board, established in Title 5, section 12004‑A, subsection 13.
Additional definitions for plug-in photovoltaic system and plug-in battery system are included under Title 35-A § 3475(1)(C) and (D). For questions about whether a system complies with the requirements of Title 35-A § 3475, it’s recommended you consult an electrician licensed in the State of Maine.
Customers are strongly encouraged to carefully review the instructions on page 1 of the Plug-In Solar Form and submit the completed form to their T&D utility using the preferred delivery information below. Customers may submit this form to their T&D utility via email or mail. If a T&D utility’s information is not included below, please contact them directly to verify where you should submit this form.
