Troop C

On the early morning of Dec. 8, 2020,  at approximately 2:00 a.m., State Police received the report of a multi-vehicle crash on I-95 southbound in the area of mile 113 in Augusta. Kennebec Sheriff’s deputies were in the area and immediately responded as well as State Police Troopers. 

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that a 2021 Volvo tractor-trailer unit owned by Trans 99 Logistics of Ontario, Canada was hauling peat moss had slowed to an almost stop in the breakdown lane however partially exposed to the right driving lane. A 2013 Freightliner tractor-trailer owned by Kris-Way Trucking of South Portland, ME was hauling US Mail and also was traveling south on I-95, followed by a Delta Ambulance in the right travel lane. The Freightliner Tractor-Trailer unit crashed into the rear of the Volvo tractor-trailer. The ambulance struck debris from the load of peat moss in the roadway.      

The driver of the Freightliner, Clayton Crosby, 52, from East Millinocket, was entrapped and was extricated by Augusta Fire Dept. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The occupants of the Delta owned Ambulance and of the Volvo tractor-trailer unit that was operated by a 24-year-old driver and his passenger, both of Nova Scotia, Canada, were not injured. Both tractor-trailer units sustained massive damage and had to be towed from the scene. The ambulance was transporting a patient, however, was not responding to an emergency sustained functional damage to the front. 

I-95 southbound was shut down for approximately 4 hours while the vehicles were removed from the scene by A/C Towing and Maine DOT cleaned up the roadway. 

The US Postal Inspector responded to the scene. The crash was also investigated by the Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction Units. Maine Department of Environmental Protection also responded due to the minor fuel leakage on the roadway.
 

On Wednesday, November 25, at 10:25 a.m., the Maine State Police Troop C responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 95 in Waterville. On arrival, Troopers learned a blue 2003 Chevy pickup truck was traveling north at mile marker 127 and left the roadway during a snow storm. The vehicle went over the interstate guard rail near the overpass for Kennedy Memorial Drive (KMD) and landed on its roof in the westbound lane of KMD before going over another guardrail. Quickly following the collision the vehicle became engulfed in fire. 
 
The operator Gary Capehart, 71, of Sanford, and his passenger Susan Pope, 63, of Sanford were found deceased in the vehicle when first responders arrived. 
 
Westbound traffic on KMD was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated. It is believed that speed, weather conditions, and traffic congestion due to another crash were factors. Prior to the crash Maine DOT was out maintaining the roadways and the advisory warning signs were on warning motorists to reduce their speed to 45-mph.

One person is dead after a crash in Sidney. 

On Oct. 2, 2020, at 3:03 p.m., Troopers responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash on I-95 northbound at mile 116 in Sidney.   The preliminary investigation suggests that the orange 2005 Honda Element utility vehicle was traveling north in the right lane during a rainstorm.  Witnesses stated that the vehicle suddenly crossed into the passing lane, went off the roadway into the grassy median where it side-swiped a tree with the passenger side of the vehicle.  The driver, Nicholas Caron, 18, of Bangor, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics on scene.  The vehicle sustained massive passenger side and top damage.  Both airbags deployed and the driver was wearing his seatbelt.  Maine Department of Transportation, Sidney Fire Dept., and Delta Ambulance responded to the scene.  A Kennebec Sheriff’s detective came upon the scene and assisted with interviews of witnesses. 

The crash is still under investigation from Troopers from Troop C.  
 

On Oct. 1, 2020, at approximately 1:52 a.m., Troop C Troopers stopped a vehicle for several motor vehicle violations to include speed and defective equipment on I-95 in Augusta. 

During the traffic stop, Troopers identified several indicators of criminal activity, and a drug-sniffing K9 was requested to the scene, who subsequently indicated to the presence of narcotics within the vehicle. A search was conducted of the vehicle and it’s passengers and Troopers located $6,485.00 in assorted cash, 69 grams of Heroin, 63 grams of crack cocaine, 1 gram of cocaine, and nearly a half a pound of assorted Oxycodone and Xanax pills pre-packaged for sale. 

Troopers arrested John Wesley Clement (22) of Bangor and charged him with two counts of Aggravated Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs, Class A felonies, Aggravated Trafficking of Schedule Z Drugs, a Class C Felony, Failing to Give Correct Name and Date of Birth, and Violating Conditions of Release, a Class C Felony. Also arrested was Mollie Robichaud (19) of Brewer and charged with two counts of Aggravated Trafficking of Schedule W Drugs, Class A Felonies, and Aggravated Trafficking of Schedule Z Drug, a Class C Felony. 

UPDATE: Mr. Pelletier has been located by Bangor Police and has been checked into an area hospital. Thank you all for your assistance.

Maine State Police out of Troop C have issued a Silver Alert for Walter Pelletier, 81, of Canaan. Mr. Pelletier went missing at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 18, 2020, from his residence at 2000 Hill Road in Canaan. Mr. Pelletier suffers from dementia, hallucinations, and has kidney issues. He is described at a white male, 5’10”, 140 lbs., with gray hair and brown eyes. He was driving a Blue 1996 Ford Mustang with a vanity plate of OLDPAPA. 

Mr. Pelletier stated he was going into town, Canaan Superette, to get gas and has not been seen or heard from since.  He has no phone, family is unaware of any destination he would venture to, and none of the stores in town have seen him.

Unbeknownst to Mr. Pelletier he has health problems that may need immediate medical attention.

Maine State Police from Troop C are investigating a fatal crash involving a man from Hudson.
On Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, at 2:13 a.m., Maine State Police Troop C Troopers responded to 156 Warren Hill Road in Palmyra for a report of a crash involving a single vehicle with numerous injuries.
 
Upon arrival and investigation into the crash, Troopers learned that Adam Webber (25) of Hudson Maine was killed in the crash, and six occupants in his 2005 Ford F350 all sustained serious injuries as a result of the truck’s impact. The occupants were transported for medical treatment to Sebasticook Valley Hospital. 
 
The case remains under investigation, but speed and alcohol were both likely factors in the crash.

Maine State Police and Waterville Police are currently responding to a person discharging a firearm in Waterville. Police are asking Media who wish to report on the incident to stage at the Waterville Police Station for safety reasons.  We do not have a scheduled conference but will provide more information as it becomes available.

PITTSFIELD, Maine –  The Maine State Police, Troop C received a complaint of a silver 4-door sedan with Florida plates operating erratically and speeding southbound on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield. A Trooper located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however, the operator refused to stop and began passing several groups of vehicles in the break down lane. 

The vehicle was pursued into Clinton where it exited, turned towards Benton and ended in Fairfield. Patrick A. Smith (24) of Ohio, was taken into custody without further incident. Patrick was transported to the Somerset County Jail and has been charged with Eluding an Officer, Driving to Endanger, Criminal Speed and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident. Other agencies that assisted were the Fairfield Police Department, Maine Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Maine Warden Service.
 

State Police have arrested Derell Guy, 34, of Lynn, Mass., without incident.

On July 27, 2020, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Wilton Police Department stopped a vehicle on Route 2 in the town of Wilton where Guy was a passenger. Guy, who was wanted on a criminal arrest warrant out of Massachusetts for Armed Robbery and Murder, fled on foot and remained at large overnight.

At 11:30 a.m. on July 28, 2020, Maine State Police received credible information of a confirmed sighting of Guy behind a residence on Earth Way in the town of Carthage.

Multiple law enforcement agencies immediately responded and saturated the area. After a brief K-9 track with the Maine State Police Tactical Team, Guy was located at approximately 1 p.m. and taken into custody without incident. He was located on the Winter Hill Road in Carthage, Maine, approximately 6 miles from where he was initially stopped.

Guy has been transported to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office where the U.S. Marshals Service will be charging him with being a fugitive from justice and Guy will await extradition from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 

This operation was a combined effort from the Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service, Maine Forest Service, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Wilton Police Department, Department of Corrections, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Marshals Service, the Maine State Police Tactical Team and Maine State Police Crisis Negotiation Team.

Robert Belmain, 53, of Caribou, was transported today by State Police Troopers to the Kennebec County Jail after he had received medical treatment from injuries sustained in a crash during a high speed pursuit with Troopers on Sunday, June 14th in Waterville. During the pursuit Trooper Mickael Nunez, a 3 year veteran with the State Police was seriously injured as he attempted to deploy a tire deflating device to end the pursuit on Route 3 in China. Trooper Nunez remains at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta with his family, and is listed in fair condition. 

The Maine State Police would like to thank the many people who rushed to render aid to Trooper Nunez when he was struck by the vehicle Belmain was driving. 

Belmain was charged with numerous criminal offenses to include, Elevated Aggravated Assault, Driving to Endanger, Reckless Conduct and Eluding. Belmain will remain at the Kennebec County Jail and held without bail until his initial court appearance.
