  • Hollis man experiencing medical event killed in crash

    On Friday, May 13, 2022, at approximately 1:15 p.m. Maine State Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Saco Road in Hollis. Once on scene Troopers determined that a 2007 Toyota Yaris, operated by 75-year-old Robert Smith of Hollis was traveling eastbound when he lost control of his car and crashed onto a property in the area of the 300 block on Saco Road. Smith’s brother, a passenger in the car was able to gain control of the steering wheel and prevent the car from crashing into the residence. Hollis Fire and Rescue Departments responded to the scene and attempted to stabilize Smith. He did not survive. It appears that Smith had a medical event that led to the crash. 

    The Maine State Police would like to extend our condolences to Robert Smith’s family and friends. 
     

  • Motorcycle Crash in Crawford

    On Saturday May 14, 2022 at approximately  5:00 p.m. Maine State Police responded to a single vehicle motorcycle crash in Crawford. Initial investigation determined that the driver 64-year-old Brian Colby of Bucksport and his passenger 41-year-old Brandi Rossell of Hudson were traveling southbound on Route 9 in Crawford when Colby lost control of his motorcycle. Colby and Rossell both suffered serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Maine State Police Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

    Downeast EMS, Life Flight, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and local fire departments assisted on scene.

    Trooper Travis Chapman stopped a vehicle on Route 1 in Sullivan. As a result of the roadside investigation the operator Tony Bates (44) of Belfast was arrested for Operating Under the Influence. A drug recognition evaluation was conducted, and Tony was suspected to be under the influence of drugs. Tony was charged with Operating Under the Influence of Drugs and Possession of a Schedule W Drug. Sergeant Gavin Endre assisted

    05-07-22

    Trooper Travis Chapman responded to a fatal car versus motorcycle crash in TWP 22. The operator of the motorcycle, Charles Brown (49) of Indian Township was pronounced deceased on scene. The operator of the other vehicle, Daniel Lyons (46) of Veazie had fled the scene on foot and was apprehended after a search of the area. Daniel was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and was subsequently arrested for class B Operating Under the Influence and Class A Manslaughter. Corporal Blaine Silk, Troopers Josh Lander, Jarid Leonard, Taylor Dube and his K9 partner assisted on scene as well as Warden Alan Curtis, Maine DOT and the Osborn Fire Department.

    Trooper Kim Sawyer summonsed Dustin Ramsdell (28) of Calais for breaking the driver’s side window on a vehicle while in Princeton.

    Sergeant Jeff Ingemi responded to a rollover crash in Jonesport and as a result of the investigation Damian Reyes (20) of Jonesport, was summonsed for Operating after Suspension.

    Trooper Owen Reed responded to a theft complaint in Brooksville where an antique sink was reported stolen.  Investigation continues.

    05-12-22

    Trooper Jarid Leonard conducted a motor vehicle stop in Baring Township. Walter Tomah (39) of Indian Township was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with an Expired Registration Exceeding 150 days.

    05-14-22

    Brian Colby (64) of Bucksport and Brandi Rossell (41) of Hudson were involved in a single vehicle motorcycle crash. Brian and Brandi were travelling southbound on Route 9 in Crawford. They approached a sharp curve and Brian lost control of his motorcycle. Brian suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Brandi suffered serious injuries. It’s not yet known if her injuries are fatal. Trooper Leonard is conducting an ongoing investigation. Downeast EMS, Life Flight, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and local fire departments assisted.

    Trooper Miles Carpenter responded to a civil complaint in Franklin. While on scene, he discovered a camper that was stolen out of Ohio. Trooper Carpenter recovered the stolen camper and summonsed Lisa Brooke Saunders (40) of Michigan for theft of services.

    Trooper Travis Chapman and Sergeant Gavin Endre responded to the intersection of Macquinn Road and Douglas Highway in Lamoine. A passerby reported a male operator was passed out in his vehicle at the stop sign. The operator of the vehicle, Joseph Fallica (31) of Lamoine, was arrested and charged with Operating Under the Influence.

     

  • Brewer man with suspended license and outstanding warrants crashes into garage in Bangor

    On Saturday, May 14, 2022, at approximately 10:00 p.m. Maine State Police Sgt. Aaron Turcotte attempted to stop a vehicle that was traveling from Hermon inbound towards Bangor on Route 222/Union Street for traveling more than 100 MPH. The driver of the 2011 Ford Fusion failed to stop and after it started making dangerous passes, Sgt. Turcotte out of an abundance of caution made the decision to terminate the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was later found crashed into a garage on Randolph Street in Bangor and the driver had fled the scene. An investigation determined that the driver of the car was 19-year-old Preston Kay of Brewer who had a suspended driver’s license and active outstanding warrants for his arrest. Police located Kay hiding inside the garage. He was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with minor injuries. Kay has since been released from the hospital. He has been arrested and charged with Eluding an Officer, Operating Under the Influence, Operating after Suspension, and Criminal Speed.

    Brief Synopsis:       Tr. Desrosier spoke to first responders at the Grand Isle Fire Department regarding their responsibilities while responding to a scene, traffic safety at an incident, and other similar topics.

    Brief Synopsis:       Cpl. Quint was driving through Houlton when he observed a vehicle with a cracked windshield and the driver was using her mobile phone while driving.  A traffic stop was conducted, and the woman said she knew she was not supposed to be on her phone, but her son called, and she needed to speak with him.  After an investigation, it was the woman’s licensed was revoked.  She was issued a warning for no inspection certificate and for the broken windshield, issued a traffic summons for using her phone while driving, and a criminal summons for operating after revocation.

    Brief Synopsis:       A store clerk called the State Police reporting a man just purchased four beers and then fell in the parking lot.  The clerk suspected the man may be drunk.  Sgt. Clark was in Easton and responded but the man had already left in his vehicle.  Tr. Rider checked the area and went to the man’s house which was nearby and found him.  After an investigation, the man was arrested to OUI and VCR.  The man was transported to Presque Isle PD for a breath test and was able to post bail

    Brief Synopsis:       A woman came to the State Police Barracks to turn herself in due to having an arrest warrant.  Tr. Castonguay spoke with the woman and arranged to have a bail commissioner come to the Barracks where the woman was able to post her own bail.

    Brief Synopsis:       Tr. Martin received a trespass complaint in Limestone.  The homeowner was out of state and saw their grandson in the home after he was told not to enter the residence.  The homeowner didn’t want to take any action but requested Tr. Martin talk to the grandson about not going in the home.  The grandson said he understood and wouldn’t go back.

    Brief Synopsis:       Tr. Martin and Tr. Roy along with Sgt. Fuller responded to a single vehicle rollover crash.  The operator failed to come to a complete stop at an intersection and the suffered an equipment failure.  The failure caused the load the truck was hauling to shift and cause the rollover.  The driver suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene.  Route 1 was reduced to one lane while the roadway was cleared.

    Brief Synopsis:       Tr. Martin assisted a Washburn officer with arresting a transient man with 3 outstanding warrants.  The man was seen by the officer earlier in the day but was unaware of the warrants.  Tr. Martin and the officer located the man at an apartment building and took him into custody.  The man was intoxicated and had to be transported by ambulance to the hospital.  He was cleared by the hospital and transported to the Aroostook County Jail.

    Brief Synopsis:       Cpl. Casavant received a theft report from a man in Woodland.  The victim advised a truck pulled up to his yard and stole a utility trailer sometime overnight.  The man had surveillance cameras and will be forwarding the footage to Cpl. Casavant.

    Brief Synopsis:       Tr. Roy responded to a Perham residence after a homeowner called to advise his neighbor was on his property highly intoxicated and yelling at him.  Tr. Roy met with both parties and warned the 64-year-old woman for Criminal Trespass.  She was advised to go back into her house for the evening which she agreed to do.

    Brief Synopsis:       Sgt. Haines and Tr. Roy responded to a Castle Hill residence after a woman called to report two men were fighting outside of the house.  Sgt. Haines’ investigation revealed one of the men was trying to stop the other from driving intoxicated and it became physical.  The suspect was highly intoxicated and irrational.  As a result of the investigation, Sgt. Haines attempted to arrest the 36-year-old man and he resisted.  Sgt. Haines was able to gain control of the man and place him in handcuffs.  Sgt. Haines transported the man to ACJ where he was charged with Assault, Criminal Trespass and Refusing to Submit to Arrest.

    Brief Synopsis:       Tr. Sylvia and K-9 Ziva assisted Troop J with a search warrant in Danforth.  As a result of the warrant, two people were arrested, and stolen property was recovered. 

  • Troop G Weekly Report - 05/09/2022 - 05/15/2022

    On 05/09/2022, Cpl. Cote stopped Jose Rodriguez (36) of Providence, RI on the ME Turnpike northbound in Auburn.  His right to operate in ME was under suspension.  He was charged with Operating after Suspension and a licensed passenger drove the vehicle away.

    On 05/10/2022, Cpl. Cropper stopped Aaron Scally (22) of Saco for speed on the ME Turnpike northbound in Gray. His license was found to be under suspension and he was summonsed for OAS.

    On 05/11/2022, Tpr. Ellis stopped Audrey Chambers (33) of Rhode Island for an expired ME registration northbound in York. She was found to have a Rhode Island arrest warrant. She was charged with fugitive from justice, arrested, and transported to York County Jail. Cpl. Physic assisted.

    On 05/13/2022, Cpl. Cote stopped Joseph Verzosa (54) of Auburn on the ME Turnpike at Exit 53 in Falmouth.  He was under the influence and put through a battery of field sobriety tests.  He was found to be impaired and arrested.  His license was found to be under suspension for OUI.  He had two prior OUI convictions.  He was taken to the Portland Police Station for an Intoxilyzer test.  The results were over the legal limit.  He was then taken to the Cumberland County Jail where he was charged with Operating Under the Influence and Operating After Suspension.  

    On 05/13/2022, Tpr. Anstett responded to Madison to complete a motorcycle crash reconstruction. Preliminary investigation shows a male who was operating his Jeep while impaired passed through a stop sign, colliding with a motorcycle and its two occupants.

    On 05/14/2022, Cpl. Cote stopped Zeeshan Bhatty (39) of Leominster, MA on the ME Turnpike northbound in Scarborough.  He was under the influence and put through a battery of field sobriety tests.  He was found to be impaired and arrested.  He was taken to the Portland Police Station for an Intoxilyzer test.  The results were over the legal limit.  He was then taken to the Cumberland County Jail where he was charged with Operating Under the Influence.  

    On 05/14/2022, Tpr. Anstett responded to I-95 in Falmouth for a crash. Investigation revealed that James George (67) of Newburyport MA was traveling northbound while impaired, causing a multi-vehicle crash. George was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, arrested, and charged with Operating Under the Influence – Alcohol. Additional charges are pending.

    On 05/14/2022, Tpr. Pescitelli received a traffic complaint at MM 62N. Tr. Pescitelli made contact with the vehicle and observed operation that was consistent with an intoxicated driver. Upon making contact with the operator and passed out passenger, Tpr. Pescitelli observed multiple signs of impairment and vomit on the outside of the passenger’s door.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and the operator was placed under arrest for suspicion of OUI. An intoxilyzer test at the Androscoggin County Jail revealed the operator’s BAC to be over the legal limit.

    On 05/15/2022, Cpl. Peckham stopped Taylor Hoyt (29) of Winthrop on I-95 in Farmingdale for suspended registration. Hoyt was charged with FT produce insurance and the vehicle was towed.

    On 05/15/2022, Cpl. Peckham stopped Kevan White (31) of Lewiston on I-95 in West Gardiner for a vehicle defect. White was charged with OAS, FT produce insurance, and no inspection, and the vehicle was towed.

  • Troopers Trying to ID Suspect in Lebanon Theft

    Lebanon Theft WebMaine State Police are seeking assistance from the public in locating a stolen side-by-side and identifying the suspect involved.

    On May 15, a side-by-side was stolen from Northeast MotorSports in Lebanon. The subject is a male, with reddish facial hair and looks to be in his 30’s. The male was seen walking Westbound on Route 202 before entering the business property. The side-by-side was last seen turning off the trail system onto Lower Cross Road. If anyone has any information on the subject pictured or the theft of the side-by-side, please reach out to Tr. Ritland at 207-624-7076 x9.

  • Maine Criminal Justice Academy graduates’ largest class with first female president in the program’s history

    On Friday, May 20, 2022, 68 police cadets graduated from the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP) at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.

    The 41st BLETP is the largest graduating class in the program’s history. The 18-week intensive residential training program teaches and trains the cadets to deal with the rigors of the job.

    The class began in January with 71 cadets. 68 cadets ranging from age 21 to 53, graduated Friday including 11 females and the first female to be elected class president, Kelsey Jacobs of the Buxton Police Department.  
     
    The 41st BLETP represents 43 State, Municipal, and County law enforcement agencies that span from Caribou to Kittery. 
     
    Family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers filled the parade deck to watch as the graduates were given their diplomas and badges to become the newest law enforcement officers in Maine.BLETP Shields

  • SILVER ALERT: Joan Loendorf LOCATED SAFELY

    Joan LoendorfUPDATE: She has been located safely

     

    The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office has issued a Silver Alert for 69-year-old Joan Loendorf of Hammond.  Loendorf was last seen Saturday, May 2022 at approximately 7:00 p.m. walking away from her home at 1374 B Road in Hammond. Her direction of travel is unknown.

    Loendorf is a white female, 5’8”, 150 lbs. with white hair and black eyes. Loendorf who suffers from dementia was last seen wearing a lime green coat and blue jeans.

    Anyone who sees Joan Loendorf or has information should call 911 or the Aroostook County SO.

    Trooper Steven Mahon responded to a theft complaint in Hancock where metal building items were reported stolen from a construction site.  Sergeant Jeff Ingemi and Trooper Josh Lander assisted.  Investigation continues.

    05-18-22

    Trooper Jarid Leonard conducted a speed detail on Route 1A in Dedham. During the detail, many operators were stopped for speeding 15mph or more through the active construction zone. The construction zone is clearly posted at 40mph. Citations were issued.

    05-20-22

    Trooper Owen Reed responded to a crash in Sedgwick shortly after 2200 hours where a gray 2008 Subaru Legacy, operated by Dakota Markham (18) of Sedgwick, was travelling South on the Caterpillar Hill Road and drove across the oncoming lane and off the opposite side of the roadway.  Markham was deceased at the scene.  A 15-year-old passenger was transported to a local hospital for injuries.  Speed and driver inexperience were factors in the crash.  Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts. Sergeant Jeff Ingemi, Hancock Sheriff Office, Peninsula Ambulance and Sedgwick Fire Department assisted at the scene.

    Trooper Steven Mahon responded to a crash in Cherryfield where a side by side operating on the roadway left the roadway and crashed into a telephone pole. Three occupants were injured in the crash.
