Maine parents may choose to educate their children at home. Parents take full responsibility for the child while providing home instruction — they legally direct the child's education by choosing the curriculum, facilitating the process, and determining academic needs. Home instruction is funded exclusively by the parent.
Resources for Families
While the Department does not make curriculum recommendations, there are resources available for those interested in home instruction in Maine.
- Check with your resident school administrative unit before the start of the school year regarding borrowing textbooks, unit assessments, and other public school resources.
- Explore Maine's Content Areas and Standards to inform your teaching curriculum choices.
- Connect with other home instruction parents and groups — many have an online presence or can be found through parent groups.
- Read the Home Instruction Frequently Asked Questions.
