AAR-01: Post-Incident After Action Reports

This introductory course offers a practical overview of After-Action Reports (AARs) and their role in post-incident evaluation. The course introduces participants to the purpose and structure of AARs, the importance of collecting and analyzing data after an event, and how AARs support organizational learning and continuous improvement. Participants will explore key components of the AAR process, including data collection methods, structured analysis techniques, and the development of actionable recommendations to strengthen future preparedness and response efforts. No prior experience with AARs is required. 

Target Audience: This course is designed for newly appointed emergency management directors and emergency management personnel who are in the early stages of developing a process to create post-incident after action reviews, with a particular focus on those working within local government. 

Eligibility: This is a priority seating course offering. All are welcome to apply. Enrollment is based on meeting the NEMTEC mission and ensuring adequate participation of the target audience.

Prerequisite: None.

Requirements: This is a VIRTUAL course offering. To participate in this course, you must have a computer with a functioning camera and microphone.  This course requires a significant amount of group work and participation. Failure to have a functioning camera/mic may result in an inability to participate in, or complete, the course.
