Each spring, MaineDOT evaluates potential damage to state and state-aid highways and determines whether weight restrictions should be imposed to prevent damage due to freeze/thaw action. Many municipalities undertake similar evaluations and restrictions on local road systems.
Below are links to three useful maps. The Cumulative Thawing Index from the Northeast Regional Climate Center tracks freeze/thaw data throughout the posted roads season. The yellow and maroon bands indicate areas where the ground is beginning to thaw, and where roads may become vulnerable.
The other two maps will bring you to MaineDOT's Map Viewer with layers turned on specifically to show roads that are currently posted, and roads that are expected to be posted based off historical data.
Preserving Maine's Roads
Roads represent a major public investment that must withstand New England’s challenging weather. Spring weight restrictions help protect them during thawing conditions, when they are most fragile.
By properly caring for Maine’s roads when they are most vulnerable, we can reduce damage and preserve this important infrastructure for years to come.

Cities/Towns
All Maine towns and cities have the authority to post weight restrictions on local roads. However, municipalities have no authority to post state or state aid highways within their borders (whether inside the urban compact or not). All municipalities are invited to share their listings with MaineDOT so that we can host them on this page.
Historical listings, also provided below, can still provide useful data to help predict future closures.
