Bridge Observatory To Close Tomorrow, Re-Open Tuesday

PROSPECT, Maine ? In order to prepare for the potential impacts of Hurricane Irene, the Maine Department of Transportation has decided to close the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory beginning at noon, Friday, August 26. Crews plan to reopen the observatory as scheduled on Tuesday, August 30 at 9 a.m. The bridge will remain open to vehicle traffic while the observatory is closed.

Late Night Ramp Closures To Occur Tonight In Freeport

FREEPORT, Maine -- Construction on Interstate 295 in Freeport calls for on- and off-ramp closings this week. The following schedule details the timing for the closings and alternate routes:

Monday, August 29

-Exit 20 southbound on-ramp, closed 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. ? Use either Exit 22 (Mallett Drive) in Freeport or Exit 17 (Route 1) in Yarmouth to enter Interstate 295 southbound.

-Exit 24 northbound on- and off-ramp, closed 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. ? Use Exit 22 (Mallett Drive) in Freeport to exit/enter Interstate 295 northbound.

Storm Destroys Two Bridges, Closes Route 27 In Carrabassett Valley

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine ? MaineDOT engineers and crews continue to work on roads and bridges damaged in the wake of tropical storm Irene. Much of the worst damage occurred in northern Franklin and Oxford countries where heavy rains washed out roads and two bridges.

At its peak, nearly 200 roads were affected by storm, as well as a dozen bridges. Currently, Route 27 in Carrabassett Valley; Route 232 in Rumford; and Route 113 in Fryeburg are now closed due to flooding or damage by high waters.

Route 27 Temporary Bridges Expected To Open On Tuesday, September 6

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine ? The Maine Department of Transportation, and its contractor, Reed & Reed, Inc., began construction today on installing two temporary bridges on Route 27 in Carrabassett Valley that are expected to open on Tuesday, September 6.

?MaineDOT and Reed and Reed are focusing their efforts on working through the holiday in order to restore traffic as quickly as possible,? said MaineDOT?s Joyce Taylor, who is overseeing the reconstruction process.

I-295 Construction Work Will Take A Labor Day Vacation

PORTLAND, Maine ? Motorists who utilize I-295 in the Portland area during Labor Day Weekend should face fewer road construction delays as work for the I-295 surface road projects will be suspended from 6 a.m. on Friday, September 2 until after 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 9.

There will be some I-295 sub-road work which will take place below the overpasses north of Tukeys Bridge in Portland, but this is not expected to affect the traffic flow on the highway itself.

MaineDOT Crews and Equipment To Assist Vermont In Recovery

AUGUSTA, Maine ? In response to a request for assistance by Vermont on Friday, the Maine Department of Transportation will be sending workers and equipment to Vermont in an effort to help repair the state?s storm-damaged roads and bridges.

?Maine has a long-standing tradition of helping neighbors in need, and this is no exception,? said Governor Paul LePage. ?The extraordinary damage in Vermont would compel any neighbor to assist however they can.?

Paving Process Begins Tonight On Portland?s Tukeys Bridge

Portland, ME. As contractors continue to finalize this summer?s I-295 and Tukeys Bridge reconstruction, work crews will begin the re-paving process tonight by milling the highway?s northbound passing lane from Franklin Street to just north of the Veranda Street exit. The passing lane will be closed during tonight?s operation starting at 7 p.m. through 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.

MaineDOT cautions motorists, especially motorcyclists, that they will encounter an uneven, milled surface in the passing lane during the day on Wednesday.

Rt. 201 In Farmingdale Closed To Thru-Traffic Sept. 9-15. Road Open For Local Traffic Only These Dates.

Farmingdale, ME ? Sargent Corporation officials announced today that Route 201 in Farmingdale will be closed to thru-traffic from approximately 7PM Friday, Sept. 9 until Thursday night, Sept. 15, weather permitting. The construction of a large box culvert between Northern Ave. and Sheldon St. requires that the road be closed and for a detour to be in effect. Rt. 201 will be open to local traffic only between Maple St. and Sheldon St. for access to homes and businesses. Access to all businesses will be maintained. Officials are encouraging thru-traffic to use Rt.
