The Maine Department of Transportation has closed a section of Route 113 and the Weston Bridge in Fryeburg as the Saco River has flooded its banks. The Weston Bridge carries Route 113 over the Saco River near the New Hampshire border
The road and bridge will remain closed until the river recedes. Currently there is a large ice dam two hundred yards upriver of the bridge that is estimated at 8-10? high and ? mile in length. The ice dam is a potential hazard to the bridge, and the ice dam is currently growing in length and height.
MaineDOT bridge maintenance engineers may have to inspect the bridge and its support systems before it is reopened. The inspection is contingent upon just how high the river rises, and whether the ice dam releases. Any inspection would be conducted after the floodwaters subside.
The Weston Bridge is a 300? long steel girder bridge that was built in 2006. Currently the water is within 18 inches of the bottom of the steel girders.
