Path 2: Make Learning Visible - Surface, Deep, Transfer
The ability to navigate world events, see underlying ideas and make deep connections is vital to our learners who are bombarded with information from various news and social platforms. Conceptual understandings and visible learning strategies allow students to face various sources of information and situations with cognitive flexibility. Deep conceptual learning allows the students to apply their learning to solve complex and rich tasks.

Laurie Ferry: Surface, Deep and Transfer Learning Aligning the Learning Phase to the Visible Learning (~12 minutes)
- Module 1: Surface
-
Visible Learning for Mathematics
“Surface learning is the initiation to new idea. It begins with development of conceptual understanding, and then at the right time, labels and procedures are explicitly introduced to give structure to concepts.” p. 29

Organizational structure of learning
- Look over a unit of study and consider the surface level skills/concepts, start with the standards
- How do surface level skills/concepts connect multiple content area standards to help support student learning?
- What influences might you use to support instruction in these surface level skills within and across the content areas?
