Route 3 Construction To Pause for Memorial Day Weekend

BAR HARBOR - MaineDOT is announcing today that the reconstruction of Route 3 north of Bar Harbor will pause for the Memorial Day weekend. Contractors will suspend road work at the end of the day on Thursday, May 23rd. Work will resume on Tuesday morning, May 28th. A one-way detour loop will remain in effect throughout the holiday weekend with traffic inbound to Bar Harbor on Route 3 and outbound detoured to Park Loop Road.

MaineDOT senior project manager Rhobe Moulton stated, "As long as the weather cooperates, we are on track to wrap up this project as planned by mid-June in time for the busy summer season. Right now, we are placing loam along the project route, getting ready to pave the stretch from Pirates Cove Golf Course to the Acadia National Park entrance, and paving sidewalks." In addition, MaineDOT is reporting that landscaping is being done from College of the Atlantic to Eagle Lake Road.

Access to all businesses and attractions along Route 3 is being maintained throughout the construction. MaineDOT says ample signage is in place to assist drivers and the one-way detour loop is well-marked.

When completed, the reconstruction of Route 3 will result in paved shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians as well as some new sidewalks with existing sidewalks upgraded to meet ADA standards. There will be safer crossings utilizing electronic crossing signs, a new multi-use path along part of the roadway, and an improved intersection at Mt. Desert and West Streets.

MaineDOT invites Bar Harbor area residents, visitors, and drivers to stay informed during the final weeks of the project by visiting mainedot.gov and by signing up for email alerts.
