Construction is set to begin on two different sections of Route 1 in Washington County. Crews will be repairing box culverts and pipe culverts before repaving sections of Route 1. Construction work is expected to continue until January, 2011, at which time crews will suspend work during the winter months, then resume work in May.
In Pembroke, crews will begin work replacing box culverts on Monday, September 13. Crews will first be replacing the stream crossing culvert at corner of 5th Avenue and Route 1. Crews will work both night and day shifts to replace the culvert in order to reopen the road quickly to two-way traffic.
Once work is completed there, crews will work on replacing culverts, and will be ditching to improve drainage as well as removing sections of ledge along Route 1 in Pembroke. This phase of construction is expected to continue into January. Construction will be suspended for winter, then resume in May when crews will rehabilitate the road shoulders, install guardrails and pave approximately 2.3 miles of Route 1.
In Whiting, construction is expected to begin in October, when crews will be replacing culverts. Once the culvert work is completed, crews will pave a section of Route 1 from the intersection of Gardner?s Lake Drive northerly for 3.75 miles.
