Riverbank section along Route 136 in Auburn collapses

A section of Route 136 just north of the Durham/Auburn town line has been closed as a portion of the riverbank has collapsed and slid into the Androscoggin River. Approximately 100? of the road and three utility poles have been damaged. A crane that was being utilized to stabilize the bank has slid down the bank and has fallen over. No injuries have been reported as a result of the river bank collapsing.

The riverbank slide happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. The crane was driving support piles into the riverbank when the slide occurred, toppling the crane and utility poles. Crews were repairing this section of Route 136 which was originally damaged in September, 2008 when heavy rains and high water on the Androscoggin River caused the riverbank to collapse.

Traffic has been diverted onto a detour that utilizes the Jordan School Road, the Pownal Road and the Stackpole Road.
