Augusta - MaineDOT is asking for the public?s help to identify the driver or the vehicle responsible for catastrophic damage on the I-95 Interstate overpass in Augusta.
This overpass is slightly north of the Western Avenue exit (exit 109A). It is believed that the unreported collision took place in the northbound lanes between September 1 and October 3 of this year. The vehicle was likely substantial and carrying a heavy payload or a piece of heavy equipment. The collision would have been very loud and would have sent reverberations through the surrounding highway structures. It is possible that the vehicle may have pulled over and parked in the breakdown lane just north of the 109A overpass.
If you have any information, please notify MaineDOT immediately at 624-3020 or through the website, mainedot.gov.
MaineDOT would like to recover the $3 million cost of the emergency bridge replacement which now must come from the current highway fund.
Recently, an inspection of the I-95 Interstate overpass in Augusta revealed the significant structural damage caused by an overheight vehicle going at a high rate of speed. MaineDOT is in the process of creating a detour and implementing a major $3 million capital project to replace the damaged span.
