MaineDOT Statement Regarding Waterville Accident

""

AUGUSTA – Jan. 13, 2026 — The Maine Department of Transportation is mourning the loss of two valued employees following a tragic incident earlier today on Interstate 95 southbound in Waterville.

“Today is a heartbreaking day for the MaineDOT family,” said MaineDOT Commissioner Dale Doughty. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and coworkers of our colleagues.”

The individuals who lost their lives have been identified as James Brown, 60, of Waterville, and Dwayne Campbell, 51, of Waterville.

“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the risks our crews face every day while working to keep Maine’s roads safe,” Doughty said. “Our employees work in dynamic traffic conditions and plan carefully, communicate constantly, and look out for one another while performing their jobs.”

A third MaineDOT employee was injured in the incident. She was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving treatment.

“Every worker deserves to go home at the end of their shift,” Doughty said. “Our focus today is on honoring the lives of our coworkers and supporting their families and teammates.”
