MaineDOT to Replace Culvert on Route 27

WISCASSET – April 30, 2026 — Starting on May 8, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will begin work on Route 27 at the Wiscasset/ Dresden Town Line for a culvert replacement project.

Route 27 will be closed to through traffic beginning at 6:00 p.m. on May 8 and will remain closed until 6:00 p.m. on May 10. During this time, traffic will be detoured via Route 1 and Route 127. Motorists should expect significant delays and are encouraged to plan ahead.

The project begins at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 27 in Wiscasset and ends at the Intersection of Route 27 and Route 127 in Dresden. The physical road closure will be at the Wiscasset/ Dresden town line.

The project work includes replacing an Instream cross culvert. The existing 48-inch corrugated metal pipe, located approximately 10 feet below the roadway, will be replaced with a 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe. The project requires a 50-foot-wide open-cut excavation, necessitating a full road closure to ensure the safety of both the traveling public and construction crews. The existing guardrail will be removed and reset as part of the project. The road is expected to be paved by the end of the day on May 11.

This project is designed to replace an aging instream cross culvert under Route 27. This closure will ensure the continued safety of the traveling public along a critical travel route.

Message boards and detour signs will be in place to inform drivers of the detour.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026.

The contractor on this project is Emery Lee & Sons Inc.

The contract amount is $138,000
