MaineDOT To Install Temporary Supports at I-95 Bridge in Benton
Department leaders remind drivers to stay alert in work zones as bridge work begins
BENTON – October 8, 2026 — The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) has closed one southbound lane of Interstate 95 at the overpass that crosses River Road in Benton to install temporary supports.
An inspection revealed damage consistent with a vehicle striking the structure. The bridge is located less than half a mile east of the Kennebec River, just north of Fairfield.
Southbound interstate traffic is reduced to one lane on the overpass. The work will also require closing one lane of River Road directly beneath the bridge. The River Road lane closure will remain in place after the supports are installed and until MaineDOT completes the entire project.
Motorists should use caution and pay close attention when traveling through the work area.
