Hallowell ? Crews will be replacing closed drainage systems in Hallowell beginning at the intersection of Spring Street and extending approximately 1,000 ft. toward Water Street starting on Monday, May 13th.
Closed drainage replacement will take place for approximately the first two weeks of the project, on the west side (uphill) of the railroad tracks and extending nearly 600 ft. toward Spring Street. Crews will move down to the Second Street intersection to excavate and determine the cause of recent failures and settlements at this location.
In addition, an isolated area near the intersection of Water Street will be excavated to determine and repair the roadway settlement that exists. Finally, curbing and sidewalk replacement will be done after the drainage work has been completed.
Alternating one-way traffic will be controlled by flaggers during the project hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays as needed. A short section of Winthrop Street, between Second Street and Water Street, will need to be closed at times and a temporary detour set up to safely facilitate the excavations and drainage repairs in this area and to minimize delays to travelers on Water Street.
Detour signs will help guide motorists around the construction activities. The detour will be removed, opening the roadway, when crews have finished for the day.
This effort will result in surface and groundwater being captured more efficiently.
It is anticipated all work will be completed by mid-June.
This $139,000 project will be performed by St. Laurent & Son, Inc. of Lewiston.
