Maine Forest Service Launches Temporary Bridge Grant Program for Timber Harvesters and Other Forestry Professionals

April 16, 2026

Augusta - The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry's Maine Forest Service (MFS), in cooperation with the Maine Association of Conservation Districts, is launching a new temporary bridge program to help loggers and other interested forestry professionals purchase temporary bridges for use in timber harvest operations. Eligible applicants may receive up to three new wooden temporary bridges for use on timber harvests in Maine, with a processing fee of $100 per bridge plus 5.5% tax.

Portables are among the simplest and most cost-efficient methods for temporary stream crossings during timber harvest operations. When properly installed, they protect water quality by preserving chronic sedimentation, preserving fish and other aquatic wildlife passage, and allowing stormwater flow and debris to move unobstructed through streams.

"Forest infrastructure, such as temporary bridges covered under the Temporary Bridge Grant Program for Forestry Professionals program, is the very foundation on which Maines $8.3 billion forest industry is built. When installed properly, temporary bridges allow for safe passage for loggers and equipment over streams while protecting water quality and preserving fish passage. Grants provided under this program make this critical infrastructure accessible, especially for smaller logging operations operating on tight margins." - Krysta West, Executive Director, Maine Forest Products Council

Who is eligible to apply?

Timber harvesting and forestry professionals based in Maine. Eligible applicants include logging contractors, private consulting foresters, and companies employing licensed foresters. Program funds are limited, and applications will be accepted and reviewed as long as funding is available. Preference will be given to sole proprietors and companies with fewer than 11 employees.

"The Temporary Skidder Bridge program was so easy to participate in. By completing one simple form, I was able to access funding that equated to a very significant cost reduction. Having a convenient, durable, and reusable bridge is an indispensable solution for following Best Management Practices near watercourses. It's a great program, there's no catch. Just an opportunity to save money and better equip your operation." - Kaine Kingsbury, Three Brooks Logging

How does the program work?

  1. Apply by completing the fillable PDF application or request a paper application at your local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD).
  2. WAIT to receive an approval package from MFS. Eligible applicants will receive an approval letter and agreement form to sign and submit to their local SWCD.
  3. After youve sent or delivered the signed agreement form and processing fee to your local SWCD, the bridge(s) will be purchased on your behalf, and you will be notified when to pick up the bridge(s) at the supplier of your choice, as indicated on the application.
