PORTLAND, Maine ? This weekend, motorists who access I-295 Southbound by traveling south from Falmouth to Portland on Route 1 will need to find an alternate route as the southbound Veranda Street on-ramp will be closed so construction crews can repair a bridge joint on the St. Lawrence and Atlantic RR overpass on I-295 Southbound.
Working on this particular aspect of the I-295 project will require that the southbound on-ramp from Veranda Street onto I-295 be closed beginning this coming Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m. The ramp is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, August 15.
MaineDOT chose to close the on-ramp and address the overpass issue during the weekend in order to have a minimal impact on weekday commuters. But for this weekend, drivers are advised to seek an alternate route that works best for them.
Elsewhere on I-295, shifting travel lanes and temporary on and off-ramp closures associated with repair work continue to demand that travelers pay special attention to informational signs when approaching work zones?especially signs indicating reduced speed zones.
As the work on I-295 progresses, MaineDOT continues to stress the likelihood of traffic backups during commuting hours and suggests that commuters consider carpooling, taking the bus, and adjusting afternoon work schedules.

This effort is part of a substantial I-295 repair and improvement project that will be ongoing through the fall of this year. Roadway and bridge repair work has been structured to minimize the impact on motorists while improving the safety and enjoyment of traveling one of Maine?s most popular highways.
MaineDOT appreciates the patience of all motorists during this construction period, and also asks motorists to drive safely through all work zones.
