Two-Way Traffic to Resume on Route 3 in Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor-MaineDOT announced today that two-way traffic will resume by the Thanksgiving Day weekend on Route 3 in Bar Harbor. The one-way detour loop that has been in effect throughout the summer and fall is being discontinued in time for the increased traffic anticipated for the holiday.

Currently, contractors are working to shape and loam shoulders from Acadia National Park to the bluffs. They will also be installing new guardrail in that area as well as installing new road signs along Route 3. All work is subject to weather conditions.

The reconstruction of Route 3 continues to be on schedule. MaineDOT has maintained access to all businesses and attractions along Route 3 as the project has progressed through its second summer, as planned. The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2019.

The reconstruction of Route 3 has progressed south of Crooked Road into Bar Harbor, to the endpoint at the intersection of Routes 3 and 233. When completed, the work will result in paved shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians, some new sidewalks, improved existing sidewalks upgraded to meet ADA standards and safer crossings with electronic crossing signs. Also, a new multi-use path will run along part of the roadway and the intersection at Mt. Desert St. and West St. will be improved, as will overall drainage and runoff management.

MaineDOT invites Bar Harbor area residents, visitors and drivers to stay informed about the project by visiting mainedot.gov and by signing up for email alerts.
