HAMPDEN - The Maine Department of Transportation is replacing the Twin Bridge in Hampden. The bridge carries Route 69 over the West Branch of Souadabscook Stream.
The existing structure is 71 years old and needs to be replaced. The existing bridge spans 25 feet; the new structure will span more than 53 feet. This will provide more capacity for water flow as well as better habitat connectivity. The replacement bridge will be the first of its kind in Maine: it will use composite tub girders in a "Double T" configuration.
Crews are building a temporary bridge to be used as a detour route. A signal will control an alternating single lane of traffic on this temporary bridge. Once this detour is in place, crews will begin removing the Twin Bridge. MaineDOT expects the new bridge will be finished in November. Final surface paving is planned for June of 2022.
The contractor on this project is CPM Constructors of Freeport. The contract amount is $1,846,235.
