Two Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) highway projects in Scarborough, one on Route 1 and one on Payne Road, are set to begin this coming Sunday evening.
U.S. Route 1: The first highway project, on U.S. Route 1 begins at the Saco/Scarborough town line and extends northerly 1.86 miles to a location 0.1 miles north of Milliken Road. The work will consist of ?shim? paving and then surface paving, guardrail and drainage improvements, and other related work. In order to minimize traffic delays, project personnel have scheduled the work to take place between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. from Sunday through Friday. Two-way traffic will be maintained to the extent possible, but may be restricted to alternating one-way traffic at some times. According to the contractor, Pike Industries, the greatest traffic impacts are likely to occur during the two paving stages?shim paving during the week of Sunday, August 15, and surface paving during the week of August 22. Variable-message signs will be in place to update motorists on upcoming work and possible delays.
Payne Road: The second highway project in Scarborough, on Payne Road beginning at the intersection of Gorham Road (Route 114) and extending northerly 0.63 miles to Southborough Drive, will also involve shim and surface paving, guardrail and drainage improvements, and related work. This work will also be performed nights from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with two-way traffic maintained when possible, but restricted to alternating one-way traffic at times. Pike Industries is again the contractor on the project. The major traffic impacts are expected during the two stages of paving operations?from Sunday, August 22 through Friday, August 27, and then again from August 30 to September 2. Again, message boards will be used to notify motorist about upcoming work and potential delays.
It is currently anticipated that work on both of these projects will be completed by Saturday, September 18. MaineDOT officials appreciate the patience of residents and motorists while this work is being done, and as always, request that motorists exercise extra caution and observe all signage while traveling in these work areas.
