Bar Harbor ? Reconstruction of Route 3 north of Bar Harbor will pause for the Memorial Day weekend, with contractors suspending road work at the end of the day on Thursday, May 24. Work will resume Tuesday morning, May 29.
MaineDOT?s Rhobe Moulton stated, ?We?ve been making good progress, most recently working on new drainage from Days Inn to College of the Atlantic, grading and paving driveway ramps and this week paving from Crooked Road up to the Acadia National Park entrance.? Moulton continued, ?We?ve been utilizing the one-way detour on Park Loop Road and that has helped to keep traffic moving. Drivers should still expect delays on Route 3 as we work through the summer because it?s such a busy road. You can?t make these kinds of major improvements without there being some delays, so we hope people plan ahead and continue to have patience.?
MaineDOT emphasizes that access to all businesses and attractions along Route 3 will be maintained throughout the summer. The Department says ample signage is in place to assist drivers and the one-way detour loop is well marked.
The reconstruction of Route 3 is progressing south of Crooked Road into Bar Harbor, to the endpoint at the intersection of Routes 3 and 233. The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2019. When completed, the work will result in paved shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians, some new sidewalks will be constructed, and existing sidewalks will be upgraded to meet ADA standards. Safer crossings will be created utilizing electronic crossing signs. A new multi-use path will be constructed along part of the roadway. The intersection at Mt. Desert St. and West St. will be improved, as will overall drainage and runoff management.
MaineDOT invites Bar Harbor area residents, visitors and drivers to stay informed about the project by visiting mainedot.gov and by signing up for email alerts.
