Route 1 Paving Work from Brunswick to the Sagadahoc Bridge

CUMBERLAND AND SAGADAHOC COUNTIES - The Maine Department of Transportation will be doing paving work on the Sagadahoc Bridge and on a five-mile-long stretch of U.S. Route 1 in Brunswick, West Bath, and Bath. The road work will begin at the Cooks Corner interchange in Brunswick and extend east to the Bath Viaduct, including the ramps at New Meadows Road and Congress Avenue. The Sagadahoc Bridge crosses the Kennebec River on the Bath/Woolwich town line. This work will provide a smoother riding surface, drainage improvements, and safety upgrades.

Work is scheduled to begin on April 5th. Drivers should expect a single-lane traffic pattern between April 5th and May 22nd. MaineDOT will allow the contractor to work 24 hours a day, six days a week. Ramps may be closed Sunday night through Friday morning between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. with 72 hours of notice posted on highway message boards. Two ramps will never be closed simultaneously.

The state is experiencing a significant decrease in traffic because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this low traffic volume, we expect there will be minimal traffic impacts during this paving work. We will continue to monitor traffic data and may revert to original contract language regarding traffic management if vehicle numbers increase.

The contractor for this paving work is Northeast Asphalt. We expect this project will be completed by the end of August.
