Winthrop ? MaineDOT will be holding a public meeting regarding the installation of rumble strips along an approximately five mile section of Route 202 in Winthrop.
The Department continues to identify corridors that have high rates of head-on crashes and Route 202 in Winthrop is one such location.
Currently, Maine has eight corridors where rumble strips are installed. The first two installations were in 2006, three more in 2011 and an additional three were completed in late 2013. The two for this year are Route 202 in Winthrop and Route 202 in Lebanon.
Rumble strips have proven crash-reduction effectiveness. Maine has seen crashes reduced by 50% on the two corridors that have been in service the longest. No fatalities have occurred to date on any of these areas.
- Rumble strips are an ?at that moment? intervention to warn errant drivers who may be inattentive, distracted, tired or impaired
- Rumble strips do make noise when cars cross them
- That sound of a rumble strip may be the sound of a life being saved
