The observatory that sits atop the Penobscot Narrows Bridge will be closed for two days, Tuesday, June 14th and Wednesday, June 15th, in order for MaineDOT crews to perform necessary maintenance on the vented louvers in the tower. The bridge will remain open to traffic while the work is being done.
MaineDOT crews will be increasing the length of the louvers in order to prevent water from entering the tower during rainstorms. Work is expected to be completed within two days, but it could extend into a third day if there are delays.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory is the only one of its kind in the United States. Located 420 feet up the western tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, the observatory offers unparalleled views of the Penobscot River, Fort Knox and the surrounding area.
The bridge observatory is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in May, June, September and October. During the summer months of July and August, the observatory extends its hours to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Those interested in the vista from the top of the observatory can access it through the Fort Knox State Historic Site, located at 711 Fort Knox Road in the town of Prospect. The Fort Knox State Historic Site will remain open while the observatory is closed. For more information, please call 469-6553.
