MaineDOT Provides Update on Llewellyn Estes Bridge Incident in Old Town
AUGUSTA – August 14, 2026 – MaineDOT is actively collecting data and information from the partners involved in all aspects of the design, fabrication, and construction of the Llewellyn Estates Bridge in Old Town as part of a thorough review of Thursday’s partial bridge collapse. The Department is also coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies, including the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, to identify and mitigate any concerns regarding the status of the structure. At this time no significant environmental impacts have been identified.
To ensure safety for the traveling public and for bridge workers, MaineDOT will conduct thorough inspections of the bridge spans and the temporary detour bridge currently carrying traffic. Safety remains the Department’s highest priority.
Shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday, a portion of the Llewellen Estes Bridge under construction in Old Town collapsed while a construction crew was pouring concrete for the bridge deck. Construction contractors working on site suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The Llewellen Estes Bridges carry Stillwater Avenue over two channels of the Stillwater River. MaineDOT is currently replacing the two-bridge system and is directing traffic over a temporary bridge during construction. The bridge under construction was not open to motorists at the time of the incident and traffic was not traveling on the affected structure.
MaineDOT personnel are on site and are engaged with the contractor and local officials to assess the incident, gather information, conduct a thorough fact-finding review, and to determine next steps. The Department will continue working with all partners involved to minimize impacts to the construction schedule and to those traveling through the area.
