MaineDOT to Install New Lane Shift on I-95 Northbound in Augusta
Drivers should plan for nighttime lane closures from 10 P.M. to 6 A.M.
AUGUSTA– May 5, 2026 — From May 6 to May 9, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will be implementing nighttime lane closures from 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. on I-95 northbound in Augusta in order to install a lane shift.
This work is part of the Western Avenue Bridge replacement project on US Route 202 (Western Ave.) over Interstate 95 (I-95) in Augusta, at the intersection of Western Avenue and Whitten Road.
The Western Avenue Bridge will be replaced on alignment, with a new 2 span, steel girder with concrete bridge deck structure, on concrete substructure units founded on bedrock. This new structure will replace the 68-year-old, 4-span structure. The new structure will provide additional vertical clearance over I-95, to help avoid over height vehicle strikes.
The contractor for this project is Reed & Reed, and the contract amount is $30 million.
