Augusta, ME (July 21, 2025) – The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Edward J. “EJ” Dupont as the new Director of the Maine State Ferry Service.
EJ joins MaineDOT with extensive leadership experience in complex, high-pressure environments across the globe. A retired U.S. Army

Intelligence and Foreign Area Officer, EJ held senior operational and management roles within the U.S. Department of State, including Executive Director posts at U.S. embassies including Liberia, Uganda, Belgium, Luxembourg, and at the U.S. Mission to the European Union. Throughout his 32-year military and diplomatic
career, EJ led critical logistical, operational, and security functions—skills that align closely with the needs of Maine’s island transportation system.
In his new role, EJ is responsible for overseeing all operations of the Maine State Ferry Service. His focus includes infrastructure and ticketing systems, customer service, staff training and development, operational security, regulatory compliance, and coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure adherence to federal safety standards.
Fluent in French and Portuguese, EJ holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in management. Though his professional career has taken him around the world, EJ has deep roots in Maine— his family moved to the state when he was a child and he attended school here. He and his wife live in Wiscasset. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
EJ began his new position at MaineDOT on July 14.
