The LAP Commuter Bus Marks One Year of Service

LEWISTON/AUBURN -The LAP commuter bus connecting Lewiston/Auburn and Portland has had a successful run of its first year in operation. Since its launch on July 22, 2024, the service has provided convenient and reliable public transportation for thousands of Mainers.

The Lap: Lewiston, Auburn and Portland

In the last 12 months, The LAP has carried 23,555 riders, averaging more than 1,900 passengers per month, with a high of 2,508 passengers in July 2025. The service was launched, in partnership with RTW Management for bus operation, as a two-year pilot program designed to assess demand and explore opportunities for enhanced public transportation between Lewiston, Auburn, and Portland.

The LAP recently reduced one-way fares to $5, making travel more accessible and convenient, as drivers are not able to make change for cash transactions. Riders can also purchase the new $5 fare on the Token Transit app.

The LAP connects major transportation hubs and local destinations in two of Maine’s largest urban areas, including:

  • Bates College
  • Lewiston Oak Street Bus Station
  • Auburn Transportation Center
  • Maine Turnpike Exit 75, Auburn
  • Monument Square Library, Portland
  • Portland Transportation Center

With convenient schedules designed for commuters, The LAP primarily serves those traveling to and from work but is open to all riders for any transportation need. By linking key points in both regions, the service provides a stress-free, affordable alternative to driving.

Riders can track the bus in real time using the Tripshot app. Tripshot allows riders to see all their travel options in one place. Riders can also sign up for text alerts to stay up to date on delays and cancellations.

MaineDOT remains committed to operating The LAP through the full term of its two-year pilot program. The steady ridership growth and strong community support signal a clear demand for reliable regional transit.
