Portland, ME. This evening, MaineDOT work crews and the contractor will modify the signs and pavement markings that inform and direct motorists as they travel through the work zones recently established on I-295 Southbound as it crosses Tukeys Bridge.
"As promised, we have been carefully monitoring traffic flow to determine ways to improve how we alert motorists to the new traffic patterns," explained David Sherlock, MaineDOT Bridge Program Manager. "We know the public expects us to make these kinds of communication improvements in order to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow. It?s an important part of the process."
In particular, traffic engineers will be utilizing several new visual cues and signs to make drivers aware that only one lane is open to southbound traffic taking Exit 8.
Crews will be painting lane stripes, placing roadside signs, and making changes to overhead signage tonight. Lane closures, which are already in place as part of the bridge repair project, may be shifted during the night in order for the changes to be completed safely.
Sherlock also noted that MaineDOT scheduled all of these modifications after 9 p.m. in order to minimize the impact on traffic.
This work may also require closing I-295 southbound?s Exit 8 onto Washington Avenue although this closure is expected to be very short-lived. While Exit 8 is unavailable, drivers can continue south to Exit 7 and take Franklin Street, turn left on Congress Street to Washington Avenue.
Due to higher traffic volumes, delays on I-295 are bound to occur during peak commuting times. Carpooling and taking advantage of greater Portland?s bus system will help reduce traffic congestion. Northbound drivers who are not stopping in Portland should consider using the Maine Turnpike.
Drivers on I-295 are advised to pay close attention to signage connected with the repair work especially signs indicating reduced speed zones. This effort is part of a substantial I-295 repair and improvement project that will be ongoing through the fall of this year. Roadway and bridge repair work has been structured to minimize the impact on motorists while improving the safety and enjoyment of traveling one of Maine?s most popular highways.
MaineDOT appreciates the patience of all motorists during this construction period, and also asks motorists to drive safely through all work zones.
