Portland, ME. More commuters in the Portland vicinity will need to choose alternate routes to work when the on-ramp from Baxter Boulevard onto I-295 northbound closes sometime after 7 p.m. on Monday, June 6.
This is the latest move in MaineDOT?s improvement plan for I-295 northbound on Tukeys Bridge. The plan also includes work on the four overpass bridges that carry I-295 over Washington Avenue, Sherwood Street, the Canadian National Railroad, and Kensington Street.
As previously reported, work on the I-295 southbound side of Tukeys Bridge will require that the Exit 8 off-ramp to Washington Avenue be closed from Friday night through Saturday night. Motorists should use Exit 7 during this temporary closure.

Also on Monday, construction crews will begin striping on the four overpasses. On Tuesday, crews will place barriers to narrow the lanes on the overpasses, making room for repair work to begin. Two lanes will remain open to traffic, but motorists should use added caution due to the narrower lanes.
As the work on I-295 progresses, MaineDOT continues to stress the likelihood of traffic backups during the evening commute and suggests that commuters consider carpooling, taking the bus, and adjusting afternoon work schedules in order to reduce traffic congestion between 4 and 7 p.m.Drivers on I-295 are advised to pay close attention to signage connected with the repair work especially signs indicating reduced speed zones.
